Frequently asked questions
A contract will be made in the future for the use of the AP® for a period of 4 years.
The first availability of the AP® will be in several projects. Participation in one of these projects does not involve any costs for the AP®. After these projects, we expect that the price of the device will be comparable to that of the conventional insulin pump. Of course, there are also costs for disposables such as insulin, glucagon, infusion sets and sensors.
No, not yet. The AP® is for the time being only available for adults (as from 18 year old) with diabetes type 1. However, we are preparing a pilot study with children. Furthermore, we are working on a reduction of the AP® so that the next model will be easier to use, for children as well.
The size of the first version of the AP® is comparable to that of a smartphone. The next model of the AP® will be 45% smaller in size.
You can wear the AP® he same way as you do with an insulin pump and a continuous glucose sensor. Two infusion sets (one for insulin and one for glucagon) and two sensors are worn on the body.
Insulin and glucagon
We use the pre filled cartridges for fast acting insulin.
The standard insulin cartridge has to be changed after two or three days.
In de AP® moet een glucagonampul worden geplaatst; hier bestaan echter nog geen standaard voorgevulde ampullen voor. De ampul moet dus handmatig gevuld worden en kan vervolgens in de AP® worden geplaatst.
The glucagon that we use now has to be changed every day. In the future, we expect to use a new stable glucagon that can be used during several days.
In the AP®, we use the infusion sets Accu-Chek of Roche Diabetes Care. One for insulin and one for glucagon. In order to connect with the device, these sets only are to be used.
The infusion sets have to be changed after two or three days. This depends on the kind of infusion set that is used and how the body reacts to the device.
The AP® must be taken off and disconnected before swimming. You need to do the same with the transmitters.
The AP® must be taken off and disconnected before taking a shower. The transmitters, however, must remain in place.
When you go to sleep, you do the same as you do with your pump. You do not disconnect the device. Inreda has developed a shirt in order to wear the AP® at night. This shirt has a special pocket for the AP® and it keeps the device close to your body.
The AP® is approved for the European market since February 2020. This means that in Europe the device is allowed to be produced and supplied in Europe. First, we make the AP® available within several projects in The Netherlands. Read more in the next question.
No, not as yet. The first availability on the market will be within several projects. These are necessary to monitor the long term use of the AP® and to realize reimbursement of the device. This approach results from regulation for medical innovations and – in case of the AP® – a new product, not a variant of an existing product, such as an insulin pump.
It is not yet possible to buy the AP®. The first availability on the market will be within several projects. These are necessary to monitor the long term use of the AP® with larger groups of people. Maybe that it will be possible to buy the AP® in due time.
That is too early to say. We strive to receive reimbursement (full or partial) after finishing the projects. We expect this to be in 2024.
No, unfortunately that is not yet possible. The first availability on the market will be within several projects. We do this in order to collect a lot of data about how effective the AP® is when used by a larger group of people and during a longer period of time.
Training and coaching
We aim to do everything possible to help you using the AP®. The interface is simple and even easier than that of an insulin pump, because of the fully automated regulation. However, we want to inform you thoroughly before you will hand over your glucose regulation to a device. Therefore, we offer a unique program for training and coaching. In small groups, people will get to learn all the details about the AP® during two days. Also, the new users can talk with each other about the psychological aspects that are likely to occur when taking the step towards automated treatment. Further, items such as healthy lifestyle and healthy food will be discussed.
We started two projects with a number of hospitals in the Netherlands. These projects are financed by health insurers Menzis and CZ. People are being started up step by step and by the end of 2021 there will be a total of 125 people participating in these two projects.
Eight hospitals in The Netherlands are involved in this project. We keep a list of participating hospitals which you will find in the page Participating hospitals
If you are a patient in one of these hospital, you can talk about your interest in participating in a project with the AP® with your doctor. Together you can discuss whether the AP® is the right solution for you and if you qualify for a project with the AP®.
It is essential that your hospital is working together with us in a project. Further, when a health insurance is involved, you need to be registered with the concerned insurer. When these terms are met, you could discuss your interest to participate in a project with your doctor. However, participation depends on many factors. Therefore, however, we cannot guarantee that you are selected. Eventually, your doctor will make the decision.
